Synopsis (short abstract) This publication is a compendium of the main outcomes of the online stakeholder dialogue organized by the project “Developing Capacity for Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in Selected Countries in the Caucasus and Central Asia”, funded by the Russian Federation, in collaboration with the Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition (FSN Forum). The publication presents an overview of the multiple topics that were discussed from 2017 onwards and provides the reader with a brief introduction to the main ideas and conclusions that emerged during these online consultations. In addition, this publication includes a series of short case studies that highlight good practices and lessons learned from school food and nutrition programmes and from the implementation of food security and nutrition policies in Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. This publication provides an entry point to the current thinking on the topics covered and allows reader to learn from what initiatives, project and actives are presently being implemented.

The photo-book draws the attention to the implementation of the “Developing Capacity for Strengthening Food Security and Nutrition in Selected Countries of the Caucasus and Central Asia” project in Tajikistan, launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and funded by the Russian Federation. The project’s key purpose in Tajikistan is to boost the effectiveness and quality of the school nutrition program through the creation of school-based plots, produce from which will be used in the cafeteria in cooking tasty and nutritious breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. This book provides the "reader" with an insight into how growing vegetables in greenhouses can benefit schools, farmers, local communities and children in Tajikistan.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) commissioned the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow to organize the international forum “Food policy, rural development and gender equality in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia: current trends and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic” which took place on 10, 12 and 17 March 2021. This paper is based on the discussions held at the webinars. It identifies and documents the key issues to inform stakeholders, and serves as a reference for the work of FAO and other development actors in the region. The presentations and discussions focused on the role of women in Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan) and South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia), but also highlighted cases from the Russian Federation, other Eastern European countries (Belarus, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine), the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia) and Turkey. This summary lists examples of promising practices in the region and beyond to improve the socio-economic opportunities of rural women and young people. In addition, based on the discussions of all three webinars, the summary offers a range of policy recommendations that can be deployed by FAO and Members.
