Synopsis (short abstract) The outbreak of conflict in the Sudan in April 2023 plunged the population into a humanitarian crisis. Over 20.3 million people are experiencing high acute food insecurity. To propel a change of course, FAO distributed nearly 10 000 tonnes of seeds to 1 million farming households (5 million people). This support helps strengthen household food security and nutrition for at least 12 months. As a multiplier effect, it also ensures farmers can produce enough food during that period to meet the cereal needs of between 13 and 19 million people. This document provides an overview of FAO's distribution to date, as well as its distribution plans for November and December 2023.

    With conflict raging since April 2023, the Sudan has rapidly become the world’s largest internal displacement crisis. Humanitarian needs are immense and rising. One in two people require immediate assistance, and more than one in three are acutely food insecure. Intense conflict and continued economic decline have constrained agricultural production, limiting access to food nationwide. Restoring crop and livestock production – a livelihood for 2/3 of the population – is a top humanitarian priority. This document provides an overview of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' (FAO) component of the 2024 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the Sudan. FAO requires USD 104.1 million to assist 9 million people.

    Humanitarian needs in South Sudan are expected to reach a record high this year. Amid a complex emergency that has displaced millions and destroyed livelihoods, more than half the population will be acutely food insecure during the lean season from April to June. Almost 80 000 people are likely to face catastrophic levels of food insecurity, meaning that food is almost completely inaccessible and they cannot meet basic needs. In a country where 9 in 10 people depend on agriculture, supporting livelihoods is vital and cost-effective. For example, with a USD 55 crop production kit, a family can grow and harvest a nutritious variety of food to last them over five months. This document provides an overview of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' (FAO) component of the 2024 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for South Sudan. FAO requires USD 60 million to assist 3.9 million people.

    The outbreak of conflict in the Sudan has driven over 5.4 million people to flee in search of safety. Of this total, over 290 000 have sought refuge in South Sudan – a place many had once called home; a place many had already once fled. But refugees and returnees arrived in a fragile humanitarian situation, where a cascade of overlapping crises, have strained local communities’ access to food and basic necessities. Thanks to the generous support from the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium, through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities, FAO is providing emergency livelihood kits to 9 000 food‑insecure returnee and host community households (54 000 people) in South Sudan to cope with strained resources, as well as boost households' agricultural and fish production. This document provides a brief description of the current context of the intervention and highlights the importance of the contribution in enhancing the resilience of the affected communities.
