    Shared global vision for Groundwater Governance 2030 and A Call-for-action 2015

    This document is one of three outputs of the project GCP/GLO/277/GEF coordinated by FAO and implemented by FAO, UNESCO IHP and the International Association of Hyrogeologists (IAH), in collaboration with the World Bank and GEF STAP. It envisions groundwater governance for suataining the benefits and services inurred from groundwater, to be achieved by the year 20130. The other two outputs of the projects are the "Global Diagnostic on Groundwater Governance " and the "Global Framework for Action to Achieve the Vision on Groundwater Governance". All three outputs are expected to be published under the name of the 5 partners organizations and shared with policy and decision-makers in countries as well as other stakeholders who have been invoved in the project process or are concerned with groundwater governance. They will also be put online under the project website to be accessible to a large public of policy and decision makers across development sectors.     Arsenic contamination of irrigation water, soil and crops in Bangladesh: risk implications for sustainable agriculture and food safety in Asia 2006

    Arsenic in groundwater is a major health concern in Asia and the risks from using shallow tubewells for drinking-water are well known. At present, 12 countries in the region have reported high arsenic levels in parts of their groundwater and recent studies have documented the potential risks from arsenic in irrigation water. The most well known concern is arsenic contamination entering the food chain, affecting food safety. This poses a potential dietary risk to human health in addition to the r isk from drinking contaminated groundwater. Less well known but potentially more serious is the risk to crop production. Continuous build up of arsenic in the soil from arsenic contaminated irrigation water may reduce crop yields, thus affecting the nutritional status and incomes of rural farming communities. As part of the green revolution, millions of shallow tubewells were installed throughout Asia over the last three decades. This resulted in a sharp increase of groundwater extraction for ir rigation. Considering the high number of arsenic contaminated tubewells, the amount of contaminated irrigation water entering the soil and its effects on crop yields and toxity to plants as well as to livestock and freshwater fisheries are of urgent concern. This must-read technical report for those involved with the issue of arsenic in irrigation water examines the available knowledge to date, focusing on Bangladesh where most studies on arsenic contaminated irrigation water have been carried o ut. Specific attention is given to rice owing to its importance in Asia and because it is one of the crops most sensitive to arsenic contamination. The report identifies knowledge gaps, the risks to food safety and crop production and the possible threat to sustainable development in the region. The author provides recommendations to key stakeholders concerned and advocates an integrated regional programme covering both crop production and food safety aspects within the framework of land degrada tion. Most importantly, the scale of the problem needs to be quantified and appropriate management options developed and disseminated.

    Groundwater search by remote sensing: A methodological approach 2003

    In the framework of the technical assistance provided to the Groundwater Unit (GWU) of the FAO-implemented IRAQ/SCR/986 "Three-year Agricultural Programme" for the three Iraqi Northern Governorates, a comprehensive remote sensing/GIS methodology was developed to identify potential sites for groundwater exploitation. The approach used in the study was a development of the traditional standard sequence of drainage, landforms, cover and lineaments analyses, to which several improvements and addit ions were made, such as: (1) all data were in digital format and stored in a geo-database as GIS layers; (2) all analyses and interpretations were performed directly from the computer screen; (3) on the basis of a previous positive experience, thermal lineaments analysis was performed; (4) a comprehensive geo-database was created including all GIS layers which were considered of interest for the study; (5) by using the potentiality of GIS software, which allows stacking of georeferenced data f or comparison and integration and data query for subsetting the needed information, selected layers of the database were superimposed on the Landsat image kept as background and a logical series of observations was made, leading to a well-substantiated set of interpretation assumptions. The creation of a GIS database, including the data format and entry, is a time-consuming and laborious exercise, as high accuracy is definitely mandatory. However, once the database is complete, interpretation of features leading to selection of promising sites for groundwater search is carried out easily and quickly. This as a result of data availability of all needed information in a GIS environment. Thirty test areas, selected by the field team, were investigated and 198 promising sites were identified for further ground survey and subsequent drilling.
