Traditional Livestock Keepers: guardians of domestic animal diversity

No results found.Achieving food security for all is at the heart of the mandate of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The key role of agricultural biodiversity in meeting this objective was once more emphasized by the Secretary-General of the United Nations on World Food Day in 2004, when he urged for greater attention to the role of biodiversity in the fight against hunger. By protecting and increasing the world's stock of genetic resources, small-scale farmers and herders are making an especially important contribution to food security. Their role as guardians of biodiversity has formally been recognized by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in article 8j. Furthermore, in Decision VII/3 the CBD invited all governments to mainstream agricultural biodiversity in their national plans, programmes and strategies with the active participation of local and indigenous communities. It also encouraged them to recognize and support the efforts of local and i ndigenous communities in conserving agricultural biodiversity. The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture facilitates and oversees cooperation between FAO and the Conference of Parties to the CBD. It coordinates FAO’s interaction and work with the CBD and with other international bodies, in the areas of conservation and sustainable utilization of genetic resources for food and agriculture, as well as the fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from their use. I n collaboration with livestock communities, research centres, universities, governmental and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), FAO identified and documented 13 case studies on how communities manage their local animal genetic resources. These case studies demonstrate that local knowledge is crucial in preserving the equilibrium between farmers, their animals and the environment. However, livestock keepers’ role in maintaining this balance and conserving biodiversity is under a great deal of pressure from changing land tenure policies to the benefit of the private sector and the expansion of natural reserves. Formal government involvement could significantly reduce farmers’ exposure to these risks. This study aims to raise awareness and subsequently encourage decision-makers to include conservation and development of animal genetic resources in legal, regulatory and institutional planning. -

No results found.The subject of this publication is the global management of animal genetic resources, namely of the domesticated livestock and poultry species and breeds. Attention is focussed upon the genetic resources themselves, upon the need to identify and to give priority to those which are threatened and to regular monitoring mechanisms for discerning changes in the status of animal populations. Practical issues of conservation are evaluated and the need to combine both preservation and improved use is e mphasized. Biotechnology prospects for use with animal genetic resources are described. Attention is given to the institutional, financial and administrative structures needed for a global programme and for its regional and national components. The papers presented in this publication were prepared and studied at the Expert Consultation by the authors and others. Participants attended in their personal capacities and covered all areas of the world and all the domestic species. The recommendation s are given in full and are directed towards Institutional Infrastructures, Monitoring Practices, Breed Development and Conservation Programmes, Biotechnology and Legal Aspects. -
Book (series)Developing the institutional framework for the management of animal genetic resources 2011The Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, adopted in 2007, is the first internationally agreed framework for the management of biodiversity in the livestock sector. The guidelines on the Development of Institutional Frameworks for the Management of Animal genetic resources have been endorsed by the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. They are part of a series of guidelines prepared to support countries in the implementation of the Global Plan of Ac tion. They complement, in particular, the guidelines on the Preparation of national strategies and action plans for animal genetic resources. A sound institutional framework provides a basis for effective management of animal genetic resources both nationally and internationally. The guidelines present an overview of the components of the global network for the management of animal genetic resources and advice on how they can be strengthened at national and regional levels. Detailed guidance is provided on the role of National Coordinators for the Management of Animal Genetic Resources and the development and operation of National Focal Points for the Management of Animal Genetic Resources supported by National Advisory Committees, working groups and country stakeholder networks. Progress towards the establishment of a network of Regional Focal Points for Animal Genetic Resources is reviewed and advice is offered in the form of a series of steps that can be fo llowed by stakeholders wishing to establish and sustain focal points in their regions. The guidelines draw on lessons learned from many years of experience in the implementation of programmes and focal points for the management of animal genetic resources in many parts of the world, and include personal contributions from individuals who have been actively involved in this work.
