    Food loss and waste within Indonesia's supply chains present significant challenges to both environmental sustainability and efficient natural resource utilization. This pervasive issue spans from food production to retail, affecting the ability of supply chain stakeholders to invest in essential infrastructure improvements. Food waste, in particular, accumulates at various stages, including retail, catering services, and households, further straining natural resources and exacerbating climate change impacts.In Indonesia, the reduction and prevention of food losses assume strategic importance as it directly impacts food availability, accessibility, and the well-being of consumers. Additionally, it alleviates pressure on natural resources, supports the growth of agribusiness, and enhances the livelihoods of farmers and other actors along the supply chains. Key factors closely linked to addressing food losses in Indonesia include finance, technology, knowledge, and market dynamics. Alarmingly, horticultural commodities, especially vegetables, experience losses exceeding 60 percent. Minimizing food losses not only bolsters productivity for agripreneurs but also improves food security and nutrition for all, from vulnerable smallholder farmers to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).To address these challenges, Indonesia has enacted national law No. 13/2020 on horticulture, encompassing fruits and vegetables, with the aim of creating jobs, enhancing production, productivity, quality, added value, competitive advantage, and market share. In a recent study conducted between June and December 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Center of System, a logistics research institution, analysed food losses in chili, cabbage and shallot supply chains. These commodities, predominantly cultivated by smallholder farmers, play a vital role in stabilizing food prices, controlling regional inflation, and ensuring food availability and accessibility. The study not only identifies the extent of quality and quantity losses but also provides practical solutions for their reduction.Crucially, enhancing the implementation of hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP), good manufacturing practices (GMP), and good hygiene practices (GHP) is emphasized, particularly during harvest, transportation, handling and storage. Recommendations include establishing post-harvest technical assistance facilities, agrologistic centres, and value-added processing facilities to mitigate losses due to quality degradation. Furthermore, the abstract underscores the need for innovation in technology, private-sector investment, and raising public awareness as decisive elements in substantially reducing food loss. In conclusion, addressing food loss is paramount for enhancing food security, supporting sustainable livelihoods, and fortifying the overall food system in Indonesia.

    Mountain agriculture is physically demanding and time-consuming. Rural women, who mostly work as subsistence farmers while also performing domestic work and communal activities, often face a poverty trap, undermining their well-being. Despite increasing labour participation in this sector, women remain invisible as active players and agents of change. A range of new and inexpensive agriculture machinery, adapted to local conditions, could potentially enhance labour productivity, reduce work burden and drudgery, and enable women to gain new skills and knowledge that can transform rural gender relations and reduce inequalities. It could also allow them to shift from subsistence to more market-oriented farming. However, the extent to which these technologies are available, suitably introduced (by individual use or via extension services), or adopted by women farmers in the HKH is still not clear. The webinar series Through the webinar series, ICIMOD and FAO expect to create awareness and action around current mechanization gaps and help identify good practices and possible solutions for empowering women farmers in the region. The webinar series will discuss strategies contributing to the process of mainstreaming and institutionalizing successful efforts of agricultural mechanization for improving productivity while also reducing drudgery for women farmers. The role of the private sector in agri-mechanization The third webinar of the series aims to critically discuss alternative pathways to agricultural mechanization innovation, powered by local manufacturers and entrepreneurs, and the development of scale-appropriate machines and tools suitable for the sustainable development of hill and mountain farming systems. In this context, the webinar will focus on two key areas where the private sector can play a major role in agricultural mechanization. These are (i) supporting sustainable markets for manufacturing, supplying, and importing of machines, equipment, and spare parts; (ii) provision of mechanization hire services. The first webinar of this series, Episode I: The Nepal Chapter was organized on 5 March 2021 followed by Episode II: The Bhutan Chapter organized on 7 May 2021.

    According to the Caribbean Community ( a revitalized agricultural sector could play a central role in promoting sustainable rural development and food security in the Caribbean, moving away from an export oriented approach to promote resilience and innovation in the region’s smallholder based agricultural systems In order to tap this potential, individual efforts by single value chain actors would fail to generate the impact required across the region A more holistic and collaborative and integrated approach would on the contrary promote long term sustainable impacts and lead to cost effective, healthy and safe products for all, ensuring the inclusion and integration of smallholder producers, vulnerable consumer groups and rural populations The active participation of the private sector, from farmers and small and medium sized enterprises to multinational food companies, would attract the investments needed to improve productivity, create employment opportunities, reduce food imports and drive industry transformation To achieve these goals, the Governments of Barbados, Belize and Jamaica are committed to developing the agricultural sector by strengthening the performance of agricultural value chains However, the initiatives adopted in this field have often relied on external expertise As a consequence, the three countries requested FAO’s support to improve their institutional capacity to promote inclusive food systems and value chain initiatives strengthen the capacity of ministerial staff to design, implement and evaluate value chain development ( methodologies, stimulate cross departmental collaboration, local ownership, learning, innovation, sustainability and a greater impact on agricultural development The proposed project was therefore aimed at strengthening existing institutional arrangements, the skills of senior management and human resources, collaboration with other departments and the private sector, the training of VCD teams in the skills and methodologies required, and gender empowerment.
