These guidelines illustrate recommendations for good practices on data collection in Eastern European inland fisheries, and in particular the Western Balkan region, based on the methodologies and approaches used in countries throughout Europe and from FAO experience of inland fisheries in other regions. They provide guidance on the options available to inland fishery managers based on particular circumstances i.e. commercial fishing or recreational use, and they are especially relevant for assisting the economies-in transition in Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia. These guidelines are not an overarching work on inland fisheries management, nor do they provide advice on the environmental aspects or competing uses of inland water bodies. They focus on issues of data collection to support fishery managers whether they be government agencies, fishers or angler associations co-responsible for the management of inland resources in European rivers and lakes. -

The EIFAC Code of Practice for Recreational Fisheries was prepared in 2007 by the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC) Working Party on Recreational Fisheries, involving experts and related stakeholders from Europe, North-America and Oceania. The EIFAC Code of Practice for Recreational Fisheries (CoP) is intended to complement and extend the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. It serves as the core document that describes the minimum standards of environmentally-frien dly, ethically-appropriate and – depending on local situations – socially-acceptable recreational fishing and its management. The COP contains the following articles: Nature and scope of the Code, Objectives, Implementation and updating, General principles, Environmental stewardship and ethics, Policy and institutional frameworks, Compliance and enforcement, Recreational fishing practices, Fish welfare, Stakeholder interactions, Management, Research, and Awareness, education and training. The Co P was endorsed by the twenty-fifth session of the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission, held in Antalya, Turkey, from 21 to 28 May 2008. Currently, a number of EIFAC member countries are actively promoting and disseminating this EIFAC Code of Practice for Recreational Fisheries and it is expected that the Code will form the basis for international guidelines. -

No results found.Marine recreational fisheries are an integral part of Mediterranean and Black Sea coastal life and are commonly practiced throughout the region. Recreational fisheries also represent an important driver of coastal tourism, which constitutes one of the region’s most important maritime sectors in terms of gross value added and employment. However, despite their ubiquity and potential socio-economic contribution, recreational fisheries are a data-poor sector and can vary widely from one country to another, thus impairing proper consideration of the recreational fisheries sector in policy-making and undermining efforts towards sustainable fisheries management at the regional level. The main goal of this handbook is therefore to provide a clear methodological framework to allow Mediterranean and Black Sea countries to implement suitably harmonized sampling and survey monitoring schemes for recreational fisheries. This handbook establishes a minimum set of necessary information for monitoring recreational fisheries, while, at the same time, allowing for flexibility to accommodate national specificities and data collection needs. It also provide guidance on the data analysis process as well as advice to successfully engage stakeholders in the data collection process.
