    The growing challenges of population growth, demands on limited resources by diverse actors, land degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change require the rational use of resources to sustain and enhance productivity and maintain resilient ecosystems. The availability of suitable planning tools and information to support the decision-makers at different scales and across sectors is limited. Sustainable development projects and initiatives implemented by resource partners and governments require updated land resource planning (LRP) tools that integrate all sectors, make better use of technology, introduce SLM practices and follow a people-centered multiscale approach.     Framework for integrated land use planning - An innovative approach 2020

    Population growth is driving increasing demand for food and other agricultural and forest products. Achieving food security with existing farming practices is likely to lead to more intense competition for natural resources, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, and further land degradation and deforestation. Furthermore, market-driven land use patterns are provoking unsustainable use of land resources and irreversible loss of biodiversity and fertile soils. All these trends pose a threat to agricultural production, food security, and the generation of ecosystem services. Land-use planning should thus make careful consideration of climate change resilience and ecosystem management. However, the implementation of land use plans involves a number of challenges that require resolution. Key measures include the adoption of actual sustainable land management (SLM) alternatives facilitated by an enabling environment with appropriate policies and legislation, ensuring a secure land tenure system, and mobilizing medium and long-term financial investments. Considering the above-mentioned challenges, this document developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provides an integrated land use planning (ILUP) approach to assist with inter-sectoral planning processes and implementation for the sustainable use of land resources. It provides guidance to assess several baseline aspects, including the suitability of agricultural production systems, and the examination of soil and land degradation and socio-economic factors affecting household decision-making on land-use and natural resources management in agricultural landscapes, and aims to assist with developing country-specific recommendations for the implementation of an agreed intersectoral plan.

    In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the area of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) that improve ecosystem functions of environments and landscapes affected by agricultural practices and land degradation, while enhancing livelihoods and other social and cultural functions. This has opened up a portfolio of NbS options that offer a pragmatic way forward for simultaneously addressing conservation, climate and socioeconomic objectives while maintaining healthy and productive agricultural systems. NbS can mimic natural processes and build on land restoration and operational water-land management concepts that aim to simultaneously improve vegetation and water availability and quality, and raise agricultural productivity. NbS can involve conserving or rehabilitating natural ecosystems and/or the enhancement or the creation of natural processes in modified or artificial ecosystems. In agricultural landscapes, NbS can be applied for soil health, soil moisture, carbon mitigation (through soil and forestry), downstream water quality protections, biodiversity benefits as well as agricultural production and supply chains to achieve net-zero environmental impacts while achieving food and water security, and meet climate goals.
