Fall Armyworm (FAW) outbreaks in one locality in thesouthwestern part of Ethiopia in early planted maizecaused serious damage to maize. By the end ofJune 2017, FAW infestation was reported in 374 woredasin six regions, namely Amhara, Benishangul-Gumz,Gambella, Oromia, SNNPR and Tigray regional states. In these woredas, maize was planted on more than1.7 million hectares (ha), of which more than 378 000 hawere already infested by FAW, which was expectedto increase at a fast rate, covering the entire projected2.3 million ha of maize, with the same magnitude ofimpact on sorghum. FAW was new to the country andconcerted efforts were required to reduce the impact onmaize production, which could have far-reachingconsequences on food and nutrition security. In responseto this critical situation, the Government of Ethiopiarequested that FAO provide emergency assistance andtechnical support/advice on the management and controlof this newly introduced maize insect pest. The overallobjective of the project was to strengthen FAWmonitoring and management capacities at all levels, tosignificantly reduce the infestation, spread and impacton maize, and possibly other cereal crops.

Tigray Region and North Wollo Zone (in Amhara Region) are among the most drought-prone areas of Ethiopia, and a proportion of households in these areas depend on food and cash assistance for their survival. Wild edible cactus grows abundantly in these parts of the country, and can be used to address human and livestock needs. However, the development and utilization of this crop was limited by inadequate management, and communities’ lack of awareness of how cactus dishes could be prepared. Unlike cactus, the presence of fruit trees was very rare in both areas, even though they had great potential to produce various fruits. The project aimed to address problems that constrained the development of fruit and the use of cactus in these areas, in order to improve food security, boost incomes and generate employment.

Northern Ethiopia | Urgent call for assistance

Northern Ethiopia is experiencing one of world's worst food crises. As of June 2021, about 5.5 million people in Afar, Amhara and Tigray are in high acute food insecurity, representing nearly 61 percent of the analyzed population. Of these, 353 000 people are in Catastrophe level of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 5) in Tigray alone, the highest numbers recorded in the last decade. Since November 2020, when the conflict erupted, 1.7 million people have been displaced across Tigray and into neighbouring regions. The conflict commenced at the peak of the main agricultural season (Meher) harvest period when many households had not yet harvested their crops. It is estimated over 90 percent of the crop harvest was lost (looted, burned and/or destroyed) and 15 percent of the region’s 17 million livestock were reported looted or slaughtered. Given that the majority of households depend on subsistence agriculture, the loss of their harvest and production inputs has had a devastating impact on their food security and nutrition – 2 million people require urgent livelihood assistance. In response to the dire situation, FAO has already reprogrammed USD 2 million to immediately support agropastoral and pastoral households with seeds and livestock vaccination and treatment, but more needs to be done. FAO has developed a response plan and requires USD 30 million to assist 1.4 million people in need through December 2021. A worsening crisis can be prevented if action is taken now at scale to provide vulnerable communities in northern Ethiopia with vital livelihood assistance.
