    Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global threat. Although much of it can be attributed to the (mis)use of antimicrobials in humans, the overuse of drugs in food animal production also threatens the effective treatment of human and animal diseases. Only limited data on the use of antimicrobials in food animals in Thailand and the Asia and Pacific region are available. However, indirect evidence indicates the widespread misuse of antimicrobials in animal production in the country and region. Awareness of the threat of AMR development and spread is low among public authorities and professionals involved with animal production, and few countries in the region have systems in place to monitor antimicrobial use (AMU) and AMR, carry out risk assessments and develop evidence-based policies for AMR risk management. The project was aimed at assisting the Government of Thailand to contain the spread of AMR in the country through enhanced and harmonized national capacity for AMU and AMR monitoring and AMR risk management, following international guidelines and standards. Project outputs included the development of education and information materials on AMR, guidelines and capacity development activities to reduce the risk of AMR, and the establishment of sample protocols and laboratory diagnostics.

    Animal nutrition strategies and options to reduce the use of antimicrobials in animal production 2021

    Antimicrobial resistance is a global and increasing threat. Stewardship campaigns have been established, and policies implemented, to safeguard the appropriate use of antimicrobials in humans, animals, and plants. Restrictions on their use in animal production are on the agenda worldwide. Producers are investing in measures, involving biosecurity, genetics, health care, farm management, animal welfare, and nutrition, to prevent diseases and minimize the use of antimicrobials. Functional animal nutrition to promote animal health is one of the tools available to decrease the need for antimicrobials in animal production. Nutrition affects the critical functions required for host defence and disease resistance. Animal nutrition strategies should therefore aim to support these host defence systems and reduce the risk of the presence in feed and water of potentially harmful substances, such as mycotoxins, anti-nutritional factors and pathogenic bacteria and other microbes. General dietary measures to promote gastrointestinal tract health include the selective use of a combination of feed additives and feed ingredients to stabilize the intestinal microbiota and support mucosal barrier function. This knowledge, used to establish best practices in animal nutrition, could allow the adoption of strategies to reduce the need for antimicrobials and contain antimicrobial resistance.

    Antimicrobial resistance is a growing global threat Although much evolving AMR can be attributed to the use and misuse of antimicrobials in humans, the overuse of drugs in the livestock sector also jeopardizes the effective treatment of human and animal diseases There is very limited information available in Ukraine related to the use of antimicrobials in the livestock sector however, recent studies carried out by national authorities on the sale of antimicrobials for use in veterinary practice provide clear evidence of the widespread use and possible misuse of antimicrobials along the meat and dairy value chains Awareness of the threat of AMR development and spread is low among public authorities and the professionals involved in the livestock sector In addition, no efficient system exists in the country to monitor antimicrobial use ( and AMR in order to carry out the necessary risk assessments and put in place evidence based policies for AMR risk management In the light of this situation, Ukraine requested FAO assistance to enhance its capacities for antimicrobial resistance.
