RuLIS is a tool to support policies for reducing rural poverty, jointly developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Statistics Division, the World Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). RuLIS brings together harmonized indicators and comparable data across countries and over time on rural incomes, livelihoods and rural development. Using the RuLIS data, this brief focuses on the observations made in the adoption of agricultural inputs, along with improved technology such as irrigation, and mechanised tools among crop farm households in sub-Saharan Africa.

This working paper is the update of an earlier cross-country study on household income sources using an expanded harmonized dataset. The analysis presented covers a total of 93 surveys representing 41 countries – nearly double that of the previous study – to depict rural and urban households’ livelihood strategies across different levels of economic development. The findings shed light on the relationship between household livelihood activity portfolios and per capita gross domestic product, confirming a picture of multiple livelihood activities across the rural and urban space, at different levels of development. However, we find an emerging divergence between countries from sub-Saharan Africa and those from the rest of the world regarding employment and income generation.

The Rural Livelihoods Information System (RuLIS) is a set of harmonized household- and individual-level data and indicators on different aspects of livelihoods, including crops and livestock production, off-farm and non-farm income generating activities, households’ composition and demographics, agricultural inputs, technology use, access to social protection, time use, shocks and migration. This brief uses data from RuLIS, which analyses survey data from Georgia’s national household surveys – the Integrated Household Survey Database (for the years between 2013 and 2016) and the Household Incomes and Expenditures Survey (for the years between 2017 and 2021).
