Synopsis (short abstract) The FAO Conference in 2017 endorsed the call to develop a rural youth action plan that addresses the importance of making rural areas more attractive for young women and men. Under the aegis of the Committee on Agriculture (COAG), the Rural Youth Action Plan (RYAP) was developed and presented at COAG’s Twenty- seventh Session in 2020. The Plan presents a five-year Action Plan (2021–2025), aligned to five thematic areas (or pillars) with the goal of contributing to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by equally empowering rural young women and men. The RYAP is embedded in FAO’s Medium Term Plan (2022–2025), and serves as a key performance indicator (KPI) for the cross cutting theme on youth.

    La Conférence de la FAO en 2017 a approuvé l'appel à l'élaboration d'un plan d'action pour les jeunes ruraux qui aborde l'importance de rendre les zones rurales plus attrayantes pour les jeunes femmes et hommes. Sous l'égide du Comité de l'agriculture (COAG), le Plan d'action pour la jeunesse rurale (RYAP) a été élaboré et présenté à la vingt-septième session du COAG en 2020. Le Plan présente un plan d'action quinquennal (2021-2025), aligné sur cinq domaines thématiques (ou piliers) dans le but de contribuer à la réalisation des objectifs de développement durable (ODD) en autonomisant de manière égale les jeunes femmes et hommes ruraux. Le RYAP est intégré dans le Plan à moyen terme de la FAO (2022-2025) et sert d'indicateur de performance clé (KPI) pour le thème transversal sur la jeunesse.

    Africa may not reach its transformation goals, as defined in Agenda 2063, without fully harnessing the demographic dividend through investments in youth. While youth currently constitutes approximately 40 percent of the working age population, over 60 percent are unemployed. Although Africa has policies and programmes to tackle unemployment among rural youth, the different policies at both continental and national levels do not adequately address the challenges in a holistic and coherent manner. Rural youth need customized training models and curricula, given that most of them have not had the opportunity to obtain quality education and training. Policy interventions are also required to create opportunities for them. Against this background, the project aimed to create job opportunities for rural youth in agricultural value chains, and to support and facilitate preferential entry and participation for young women and men in gainful and attractive agribusiness opportunities. The project focused on four countries: Benin, Cameroon, Malawi and Niger.
