Agriculture is becoming more knowledge-intensive. Access to timely, accurate information tailored to specific locations and conditions is critical to helping farmers make the most of their resources in changing circumstances. Digital technologies help overcome these challenges by bridging the information gap, improving access to market information, enhancing access to micro-finance, providing actionable advisories on managing pest and disease as well as improving agriculture human capital. However, sustaining digital interventions needs a holistic approach that includes the right policies, frameworks, ecosystem and capacities. This publication highlights some successful initiatives in leveraging digital technologies, improving value-chain processes and building capacity to bring about positive change among agriculture stakeholders and improve livelihoods. This publication is part of the Country Investment Highlights series under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme.

Amidst the challenges confronting agriculture in Europe and Central Asia, this casebook unfolds the stories of 25 farmers and agripreneurs who have successfully embraced digital technologies. The accounts presented here reveal that, despite the effects of climate change, the consequences of the war in Ukraine and the enduring impact of COVID-19, opportunities for innovation and resilience can still be found. The case studies presented here, grouped into five distinct use cases, illustrate the transformative power of digitalization in agriculture, and serve as tangible examples of the successes and lessons learned on the path to sustainable development. By harnessing the power of digital technologies in agriculture, we can prepare ourselves for the digital transformation of agrifood systems, which are at the core of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with effects on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The series presents sector reviews and studies undertaken in Central and Eastern Europe that cover development issues and innovative areas to increase investment in agriculture in the region. This publication provides an update to the FAO Investment Centre/EBRD Report No. 2: Ukraine: Review of the Sunflower Oil Sector (2002). It also inc ludes a mid-term strategy for the Ukrainian oilseeds sector, prepared in close collaboration with a wide range of public and private stakeholders. Between 2002 and 2005, EBRD continued to invest in the Ukrainian oilseed sector and asked FAO to pursue its efforts to promote a more active and transparent policy dialogue between local private stakeholders and Ukraines policy makers. Based on this report, the Government of Ukraine has started to implement some of the policy recommendations put forwa rd, in particular the progressive reduction of Ukraines export tax of oilseeds. The report provides useful background information for commodity analysts, financial institutions wishing to invest in the oilseed sector and governments of oilseed producing countries.
