    Agricultural growth and productivity remain central to poverty reduction This is particularly true in Nepal, where agriculture employs two thirds of the labour force and provides almost one third of the gross domestic product Agricultural production is dominated by subsistence crop subsectors, with farms adopting a mixed farming system of crops, livestock, and agroforestry These sectors could be instrumental in rescuing the country from poverty if existing subsistence agriculture practices were transformed into modernized and profitable production systems Realizing the huge potential of the sector, the Government has developed and enforced an Agriculture Development Strategy 2015 2035 designed to increase women’s ownership and rights over land, to invest in improved farming practices, technology and mechanization, and to strengthen the opportunities for farmer groups and cooperatives to access credit and services.

    Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is a comprehensive system that requires thorough consideration of local climate, natural environment, market demand, economic and cultural environment. FAO introduced CSA at the Hague Conference on Agricultural, Food Security and Climate Change in 2010 and has been strongly supporting it since then. The development of CSA in China contributes to reaching its carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality in China by 2060. This publication introduces China's CSA development and provides policy proposals. It contains four sections: the background and development status of China's CSA; practices and achievements of China's CSA, including analysing case studies such as the China Climate-Smart Staple Crop Production project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF); opportunities and challenges facing China's CSA; and national policy proposals and investments that include local schemes and smallholders for China's CSA. It is critical for China to strengthen its cooperation with international organizations to explore innovative, efficient, resilient, and sustainable climate-adaption technologies for the transformation of agrifood systems. This publication is part of the Country Investment Highlights series under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme.

    The (continued) potential of motorized mechanization 2022

    Motorized mechanization is an important form of agricultural automation and has the capacity to transform agriculture and rural livelihoods. Its benefits have resulted in a substantial increase in mechanization worldwide, although adoption has been uneven and particularly limited in sub-Saharan Africa. Agricultural mechanization has been so far dominated by large and heavy machinery, putting small-scale producers at a disadvantage due to their lower capacity to afford large, more costly, machinery that often does not suit their small, irregular, or hilly terrains. Moreover, such machinery contributed to environmental problems such as biodiversity loss, land degradation and soil erosion. Inclusive access to mechanization requires a conducive business environment through a range of (coherent) policy instruments and investments. Particularly for small-scale agricultural producers, it is important that machinery is tailored to local conditions through technological and institutional innovations.
