Synopsis (short abstract) Food insecurity remains significantly high in the Sudan, driven by increased and prolonged instability and displacement, economic deterioration and high food prices. Further cementing the key role the agriculture sector plays in the Sudan’s economy, two-thirds of the population live in rural areas and rely on small-scale agriculture for food and income. It is therefore critical that humanitarian support is provided to strengthen the ability of families to produce their own food and enhance their resilience. This document provides an overview of FAO's component of the 2023 Humanitarian Response Plan for the Sudan. FAO requires USD 87.5 million to assist over 3 million people in the Sudan in 2023.

    The ongoing conflict in the Sudan, which erupted on 15 April, has worsened an already fragile food security situation. Prior to the crisis, one in four people faced acute food insecurity due partly to instability, economic decline and high food prices. An estimated 2.1 million people have since been displaced leaving their homes in search of safety, including 467 000 people who have fled to neighbouring countries for refuge. As the lean season approaches and challenges arise in transporting humanitarian goods across borders, it is crucial to urgently provide agricultural humanitarian assistance to mitigate the impact of displacement, trade disruptions and surges in food and fuel prices on vulnerable populations. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) seeks to work with local actors and partners to save lives, ensure access to food and improve livelihoods in the Sudan. This document provides an overview of FAO's component of the 2023 Revised Humanitarian Response Plan for the Sudan. FAO requires USD 95.4 million to assist 15 million people.

    With conflict raging since April 2023, the Sudan has rapidly become the world’s largest internal displacement crisis. Humanitarian needs are immense and rising. One in two people require immediate assistance, and more than one in three are acutely food insecure. Intense conflict and continued economic decline have constrained agricultural production, limiting access to food nationwide. Restoring crop and livestock production – a livelihood for 2/3 of the population – is a top humanitarian priority.     Humanitarian needs in South Sudan are expected to reach a record high this year. Amid a complex emergency that has displaced millions and destroyed livelihoods, more than half the population will be acutely food insecure during the lean season from April to June. Almost 80 000 people are likely to face catastrophic levels of food insecurity, meaning that food is almost completely inaccessible and they cannot meet basic needs. In a country where 9 in 10 people depend on agriculture, supporting livelihoods is vital and cost-effective. For example, with a USD 55 crop production kit, a family can grow and harvest a nutritious variety of food to last them over five months. This document provides an overview of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' (FAO) component of the 2024 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for South Sudan. FAO requires USD 60 million to assist 3.9 million people.
