Implementing the Horticulture Advancement Activity in Pakistan - GCP/PAK/144/USA 2023

The development of the horticulture sector in the Balochistanand Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provinces of Pakistan is hindered by a series of constraints, including a lack of access to inputs, markets and services among farmers and other value chain actors. Despite these constraints, the sector has a great deal of potential in these areas of the country, owing to their natural comparative advantage. Leveraging this potential could create jobs and increase competition in the sector, thereby lifting people out of poverty and improving their health and nutrition status. The Horticulture Advancement Activity (THAzA) was designed to enhance potentially viable horticulture value chains in the targeted areas by introducing new technologies and innovations and establishing various facilities to support sustainable agriculture. The project focused on the apple, apricot, grape, tomato and onion value chains in Balochistan, and on the same in KP, except for onion, which was replaced with potato.

The Australia Balochistan Agri-business Programme (AusABBA Phase II) (GCP/PAK/141/AUL) has been implemented by FAO in collaboration with the Government of Balochistan in six south-western districts with the objective to engage households in profitable agribusiness-based livelihoods and diversified strategies, and creating an enabling environment to increase their incomes, improve food security and enhance nutritional status. Working closely with men and women’s community organizations, farmers marketing collectives and mutual marketing organizations, AusABBA II has accomplished to establish 11 value chains businesses in dates, onions, grapes, cumin, tomatoes, alfalfa, carrots, pomegranate, sugar-melons, livestock fattening and wool, providing support in key interventions such as crops and livestock productivity, water resources management, market linkages and agribusiness. AusABBA II’s inclusive market system development approach is encouraging, innovative and has proven as one of FAO's flagship projects in the region, with an enormous potential for replication by relevant government departments and other development actors in Balochistan.

Alternative Livelihood Options in Pakistan - GCP/PAK/147/USA 2024

The project was a crucial component of INL’s overall assistance in building capacity with regard to alternative livelihoods development in Pakistan. The targeted tribal area included Bajaur, Khyber, Orakzai and Mohmand as well as Torghar, one of the eastern districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. These areas cultivated opium poppy, a crop that causes detrimental socioeconomic impact and was illicitly traded, especially in tribal areas adjoining Afghanistan. Despite various efforts by Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies, there remain areas where security creates challenges for government and communities. The project’s goal was to identify and introduce alternative high-value crops in the target areas as a substitute for poppy cultivation. It would do this by exploring alternative livelihood options in a participatory manner, engaging with communities to develop both value chains with the highest returns and the capacities of the value chain actors, as well as promoting value chain development with relevant stakeholders.
