Synopsis (short abstract) In the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, nine country representations are commemorating their 40th anniversary between 2017 and 2019: Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, the Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Throughout the past 40 years, FAO has been committed to long-term sustainable development in the region, in cooperation with host country governments. This photo album will take you through the journey of FAO's work in the field as well as its policy-level achievements.

In 2016, FAO reached 21 million crisis-affected people, helping them to produce and purchase food, maintain their livelihoods, stay on or return to their land where it was safe to do so and enabling them to provide for themselves. However, forecasts for 2017 are alarming. Millions of people – many of them children – face the very real threat of starvation in Madagascar, northeastern Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen. Drought is once again threatening herders across the Horn of Africa, further under mining livelihoods that have yet to recover from the last drought. In Iraq and Syria, violence continues unabated, forcing people to abandon their homes and agriculture-based livelihoods. This destroys any development gains made and pushes people into food insecurity in the short term, making it harder to return and resume their livelihoods when stability is restored. In 2017, FAO is seeking over USD 1 billion to reach more than 40 million people.

The document follows the agenda of the workshop. It starts with a background description of the situation that has lead to the organization of the technical event. It sets the scene presenting the FAO's strategy on Rural Poverty Reduction and on Social Protection. It starts then with the policy review and the national Priorities presenting the learnings from the Republic of Egypt, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The second part treats the expanding of Social Pro tection to Rural Areas, presenting the experiences from Leabnon and the expansion of universal health to rural areas. The second part also contains the big question of how financing Social Protection. The third part of the document presents Social Protection and its link with resilient Livelihoods and Climate Change while the last part contains evidence-based social protection cases from Latin America and the Arab region.

Food Security and Managing Wheat Imports in Arab Countries

Arab countries face a number of food security risks due to their high dependence on wheat imports. This study explores ways in which countries can mitigate these risks. The authors evaluate the wheatimport supply chain (WISC) from the unloading port to bulk storage at the flour mill, before the wheat is milled into flour. Existing literature treats isolated topics related to the supply chain, such as strategic storage and the use of financial instruments. This study is unique in that it takes a holistic view of the supply chain by examining how strategic storage, logistics improvements, and procurement strategies can all be used to improve food security.
