DocumentFinal Evaluation of the Project “Land Rehabilitation and Rangelands Management in Smallholders Agro-pastoral Production Systems in South Western Angola (RETESA)”
GCP/ANG/048/GFF - GEF ID 4720
2018Also available in:
In Southwest Angola, the impacts of climate change have contributed to a reduction in soil coverage and an increase in soil erosion. To address these challenges, the GEF project "Land Rehabilitation and Rangelands Management in Smallholders Agro-pastoral Production Systems in South Western Angola” supported activities contributing to the strengthening of capacity and increase in knowledge for the participatory planning of mainstreamed land management. The project contributed to several outcomes at institutional level and increased community awareness and capacity on sustainable agriculture systems. Although there is evidence of an improvement in the livelihoods of the beneficiaries, the project achievement of the environmental objective is moderately satisfactory as rehabilitation of rangelands takes a significant amount of time to generate effects. Moving forward, to see impacts there is the need for beginning a project outcome sustainability strategy right from project start, in addition to promote partnerships with national research institutions to generate national and regional knowledge. -

BookletMali – Analysis of conflicts over natural resources
Summary
2021Also available in:
Due to the economic dominance of the agriculture sector, Mali is extremely dependent on natural resources and also vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. The deterioration of ecosystems has strongly affected rural populations, resulting in a very poor performance in environmental governance. Gender inequalities are also present at all social levels and help create or exacerbate tensions between different social groups. In addition to the social tensions, the security situation in Mali is precarious due to the presence of non-state armed groups. The conflict analysis was carried out to take stock of the current situation regarding conflicts over natural resources and identify initiatives for conflict prevention and management in the areas covered by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) project “Strengthening the resilience of cross-border pastoral and agropastoral populations in priority areas of the Sahel”, which is funded through the FAO-European Union Partnership Programme under the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC).
