Synopsis (short abstract) The Norway-funded Nansen Programme has supported developing countries in fisheries research and management for more than 40 years, evolving over time to address key drivers of importance for fisheries management. This makes it one of the longest running fisheries projects in the world (if not the longest). Over the years the programme has developed into a unique mechanism for cooperation, knowledge and manpower exchange in developing regions and particularly in Africa. On 24 March 2017, the programme agreement for the new EAF-Nansen Programme "Supporting the application of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries management, considering climate and pollution impacts " was signed in Oslo, Norway, by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), the Norwegian Institute for Marine Research (IMR) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Fisheries and environmental surveys with the research vessel Dr Fridtjof Nansen have been an important and integral part of the program throughout its lifetime- and a brand new state of the art research vessel has been made available to the new programme. Thanks to the use of the UN flag, the R/V Dr. Fridtjof Nansen could easily move across jurisdictional boundaries and address transboundary issues. As for the EAF-Nansen project, the EAF-Nansen Programme is implemented by FAO in close collaboration with the Institute of Marine Research of Norway, who operates the R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen and provides scientific services to the Programme.

    The EAF-Nansen Programme is a collaboration between FAO, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) of Bergen, Norway. For over forty years, the Programme has provided an opportunity for coastal developing countries to assess and manage their fisheries sustainably. The core of the research comes from vessels owned by Norad, which carry out surveys of ocean life and biodiversity. The newest Dr Fridtjof Nansen vessel was launched in March 2017, and it is the most advanced research vessel of its kind. This is an annual summary for 2018, summarizing activities carried out during the year.

    The research vessel (R/V) Dr Fridtjof Nansen is a state of the art research vessel that serves the countries partners to the EAF-Nansen Programme “Supporting the Application of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries management considering climate and pollution impacts” to generate knowledge on resources and ecosystems by use of the art gears and technologies, providing key information of complex and changing marine ecosystems to the benefit of partner countries. The current R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen is the third research vessel to bear the name. The first vessel was launched in 1974 and served for 19 years. The second vessel was built in 1993 and sailed over 605 000 nautical miles until its retirement in 2016. The current vessel is owned by the Norwegian Agency for development cooperation (Norad), operated by the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in close consultation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), who is responsible for the implementation of the EAF-Nansen Programme and enabling the vessel to fly the UN flag as a house flag. The brochure provides a snapshot of the services that the vessel can provide.

    Le programme Nansen, financé par la Norvège, soutient les pays en développement dans la recherche et la gestion des pêches depuis plus de 40 ans. Il a évolué au fil du temps pour prendre en compte les principaux facteurs importants pour la gestion des pêches. Cela en fait l'un des projets de pêche les plus anciens au monde (si ce n'est le plus long). Au fil des ans, le programme est devenu un mécanisme unique de coopération, d’échange de connaissances et d’échange de personnel dans les régions en développement et en particulier en Afrique. Le 24 mars 2017, l'accord de programme relatif au nouveau programme EAF-Nansen intitulé "Soutenir l'application de l'approche par écosystème à la gestion des pêches, compte tenu des effets du climat et de la pollution" a été signé à Oslo, en Norvège, par l'Agence norvégienne de coopération pour le développement (NORAD), l’Institut norvégien de recherche marine (IMR) et l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO). Les campagnes sur les pêches et l’environnement menées à l’aide du navire de recherche (N / R) Dr Fridtjof Nansen ont été une partie intégrante et importante du programme tout au long de son existence - et un tout nouveau navire de recherche de pointe a été mis à la disposition de ce nouveau programme. Grâce à l’utilisation du drapeau des Nations Unies, le N / R Dr Fridtjof Nansen, pourrait facilement se déplacer au-delà des frontières juridictionnelles et s’attaquer aux problèmes transfrontaliers. En ce qui concerne le projet EAF-Nansen, le programme EAF-Nansen est mis en œuvre par la FAO en étroite collaboration avec l'Institut norvégien de la recherche marine, qui gère le navire de recherche Dr Fridtjof Nansen et fournit des services scientifiques au programme.
