The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of Africa’s largest internal displacement crises, with 22 percent of the population acutely food insecure due to increased armed conflict and the impact of climate hazards. Emergency agricultural interventions offer cost‑effective solutions. For example, with a USD‑80 market gardening package, a family can quickly produce a variety of nutritious vegetables, worth USD 480 on the local market, improving their self‑reliance.

In Burkina Faso, over 16 percent of the population is expected to be in high acute food insecurity during this year’s lean season, if appropriate assistance isn’t provided. This will include, for the first time, 19 867 people in Catastrophe (IPC Phase 5). Around 4 in 5 people rely on agriculture for subsistence, and need urgent support to restore food production. Every USD 1 spent on supporting farmers with a vegetable production package yields over 20 times its value in cabbages, onions and tomatoes.

Agriculture is an increasingly vital lifeline for people in Haiti. Rising insecurity and low harvests have pushed food prices up. The violence is disrupting markets, supply chains, local food availability and access, and the safe movement of people and goods. Over 75 percent of Haiti’s most food-insecure people are in rural areas. They need urgent supplies to continue producing food for their families and community. Boosting vulnerable farming families’ agricultural and livestock production increases their self-reliance and strengthens their resilience against future shocks.
