This publication describes the long-term efforts of the Swedish dairy sector to keep animals healthy, thereby putting Swedish dairy farms at the top with regards to low use of antibiotics combined with high productivity. The Swedish success story rests on strong partnerships among farmer organizations, veterinary services, academia, and government agencies and ministries. This document is a tribute to the pioneers and current stakeholders for their sustained work in continuously improving animal health, welfare and productivity, including through the development and implementation of specific health programmes, the recording of production and disease data, the formulation of treatment guidelines and the surveillance and monitoring of antibiotic resistance and use. Key has been a bottom-up approach, allowing farmers' views and conditions to be considered before introducing interventions for limiting the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance.

Tackling antimicrobial use and resistance in food-producing animals
Lessons learned in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

This publication describes the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s multisectoral voluntary approach to antibiotic stewardship in food-producing animals, developed as a collaboration between industry and government. It is a tribute to all those involved for their tremendous efforts, commitment, and continuous work to improve responsible use of antibiotics and achieve significant reductions in their use across livestock sectors. Keys to success include the development of strong relationships between producers, veterinarians and government, industry-led target-setting and cross-sectoral learning and sharing of experiences. This has built a collective sense of ownership and responsibility, resulting in effective behaviour change for improved stewardship.

In Sweden the use of antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feed has been prohibited since 1986. Anti-microbials may only be added to feed for veterinary purposes, and always subject to veterinary prescription. When antibiotics were withdrawn from animal feed in 1986 there were no noticeable effects on calves and fattening pigs. There were, however, initially effects on piglet and chicken health, resulting in an increased therapeutic use of antibiotics. Through various measures th e health problems in pig and chicken production were largely solved within a few years and the therapeutic use of antibiotics decreased. Since 1988 animal health has constantly improved and the use of antibiotics for animals has decreased. The total use in 2001 was 34 percent of the use in 1984.
