This list of passport Descriptors for Crop Wild Relatives conserved under in situ conditions (CWRI v.1) has been developed taking the Core Descriptors for in situ conservation of CWR v.1* published by Bioversity International in 2013 as the starting point. It also builds on recent experiences conducted by the Secretariat of FAO’s International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) in the context of the development of its Global Information System (GLIS). The CWRI passport descriptors proposed in this booklet constitute the minimum initial list for CWR in situ data exchange. For each descriptor, this tool provides a brief explanation of content, its coding scheme, and a suggested field name. The on-farm management of plant material is not addressed in this document.

A lack of data and information exchange on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA) affects the conservation and use of these Resources, as well as the ability of stakeholders to monitor and report on them. The dearth of data on PGRFA exists owing to differing approaches to data management across countries and regions, which has resulted in a lack of coherence and gaps in documentation methods, particularly for in situ Crop Wild Relatives (CWR). To preserve CWR, which are used to develop new varieties that are more resistant to the effects of climate change and can therefore enhance food supplies, a standardized CWR documentation system is required. This was identified as a priority action of the FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), under Article 5 and under the Programme of Work on the Global Information System (PoW GLIS) of Article 17. This project took the Core Descriptors for in situ conservation of CWR v.1 published by the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT as its starting point, and aimed to enhance capacities, develop national inventories, foster collaboration and ensure standardized CWR documentation practices in 11 countries.

The International Treaty, and a team of Crop Wild Relatives (CWR) experts from different institutions and countries, have worked to internationally agree and publish a list of key passport descriptors for CWR conserved in situ. This international standard aims to ensure consistency in the way CWR are documented and exchanged globally. In this context, the Treaty supports specific activities and projects on CWR. In addition, it is embarked on the promotion of their use and the development of tools, including a dedicated section in the Global Information System on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (GLIS).
