No results found.A guide to good agricultural practices for commercial production of ginger under field conditions in Jamaica introduces the utilization of the single bud technology in field production systems. This technology provides a means of multiplying the limited available clean planting material and its propagation under nursery conditions. This technology forms the basis of the ginger certification programme and when supported by Good Agriculture Practices (GAPs) as described herein should help ginger growers boost their levels of production. This information has been compiled predominantly from locally validated investigations and accepted norms in the ginger industry worldwide. It incorporates the use of technologies such as drip irrigation, integrated nutrition management and integrated pest management. The aim of this manual is to provide the user with a step-by-step process flow and thorough understanding of the processes and inputs involved in the application of the single bud technology in ginger field production systems. Please note that this system of production is new to Jamaica and warrants that interested growers receive training and conduct evaluations of this system first in their own environment. Care must be taken to ensure that the recommended practices are followed to achieve the desired result. -

No results found.Over the years, Pakistan’s seed sector has grownsignificantly. The seed system was initially dominatedby the public sector in activities ranging from cropvariety development, release/registration, seedmultiplication/production, processing and marketing,to seed certification and quality control. Currently,the private sector comprises over 700 national and fivemultinational seed companies; thus, it is a major player.The public sector at the federal level is mandated toregulate the seed sector across the country; while at theprovincial level public sector seed corporations have beenassigned to produce and distribute certified seed of majorcrops to the farming community. However, public-sectorseed supplies are currently on the decline. The seedsector’s legislative environment has been improved to alarge extent by the incorporation of 2015 amendments inthe Seed Act 1976, and the legislation of the PlantBreeders’ Rights Act, 2016. In general, the level of servicedelivery by both the public and private sectors is not on apar with international good practices, hence the seedindustry has not yet harnessed the available potential. In other words, Pakistan’s seed industry, despite itslarge size and growth, has not evolved to the level ofsophistication required to compete with its regionalcounterparts. Against this background, the project aimedto strengthen the capacities of the Federal SeedCertification and Registration Department (FSC&RD), aswell as other public and private sector institutions/entities, to enable them to provide higher quality servicesto the seed and plant supply industry in Pakistan; and toimprove the systematic seed supply in the country. -

No results found.Boosting the production of ginger in Jamaica has been identified by the Government as an important means of increasing diversity and creating opportunities for improved livelihoods in rural areas, especially among smallholder farmers. This can contribute to enhancing decent rural employment, reducing poverty, and increasing food security among a vulnerable segment of the rural population. The potential also exists for expansion to meet new markets, such as export. However, ginger production is not currently meeting its potential, primarily because of a lack of coordination among stakeholders, a limited framework in which to undertake policy direction, a lack of strategies that take advantage of market opportunities, and the occurrence and spread of ginger rhizome rot disease in key growing areas. The project aimed to provide technical assistance to develop improved governance and management structures for the ginger value chain, in order to achieve greater market development for the crop, and enhanced livelihood opportunities for all stakeholders.
