    Like many other economies in transition, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan face the dual challenge of promoting development and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and ruminant systems are central for achieving both goals. Given the important economic, nutritional and environmental roles that ruminant systems play in Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, we conducted a GHG assessment (based on Tier 2 methodology according 2006 IPCC Guidelines) to understand the role of ruminants and grasslands in emissions and soil organic carbon sequestration in the region. This study found that enteric methane and manure management are the predominant sources of emissions from cattle systems; however, the study found that regions with high GHG emissions from the cattle systems also had the highest soil carbon stocks. This is mainly due to the high apportion of carbon into the soil from manure and organic amendments. Thus, in these regions, tailored practices could likely reduce GHG emissions through practices that can increase organic carbon storage. This project was the first step in understanding the role of ruminants through advanced GHG accounting methods and serve as a basis for these countries to take on larger climate investment projects and catalyse climate action through sustainable livestock development.

    Reducing Food Loss and Waste in Central Asia - GCP/SEC/015/TUR 2023

    While chronic hunger is on the rise, a considerable amount of food produced is being lost or wasted. In Türkiye alone, an estimated 18 million tonnesof food is lost or wasted each year, that is, more than 20 percent of all food produced in the country. Reducing food loss and waste (FLW) is therefore a key objective in Central Asia subregion to achieve food security, improve food value chains and reduce the environmental footprint of food systems. However, the scale and complexity of the problem requires a holistic, multidisciplinary response involving all actors and stakeholders. Curbing FLW implies not only the revision of institutional and legal frameworks, and improvement in the methods of production, conservation and distribution of food, but also a change in resource-intensive consumption patterns and increasing awareness among all actors in the food supply chain, as well as consumers. Funded by the Government of Türkiye, the project, implemented from November 2019 to April 2023, aimed to support Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan in developing measures to reduce FLW in the context of national food systems and climate change. Two components were implemented: (i) a regional component, consisting of an FLW reduction campaign and the establishment of an interactive partnership network; and (ii) national components for six countries (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Türkiye and Uzbekistan) consisting of the formulation of national FLW reduction strategies and training in FLW measurement, analysis, monitoring, accounting and reporting.

    Funded by the Government of the Republic of Turkey, the project aims to assist Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in developing measures to reduce food loss and waste. In particular, the project will support the recipient countries to: • develop national gender-sensitive strategic policy and action plans to reduce FLW; • establish FLW data collection systems, as well as measure and monitor FLW; • improve knowledge management and capacities; and • raise awareness and understanding of FLW (causes, impact and solutions) among actors in all sectors, including consumers, at national and regional level, leaving no one behind.
