The International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) of The Hague, Netherlands, facilitates the implementation of a number of ICT4D projects in various sectors, of which ‘livelihood opportunities’ is but one. I coordinate IICD’s livelihood projects in Ecuador and Bolivia, 7 in Ecuador and also 7 in Bolivia, in various stages of implementation. The focus of these projects is broad. I mention the major ones: training in basic ICT skills of marginalised groups; support to telecentres, both in terms of management and content generation and exchange; design of information platforms on the Internet; price information systems through web sites or cell phones (the latter in the making yet); use of audiovisual materials in self-documentation of farmers’ experiences; use of GIS in certification procedures of agricultural produce; connectivity solutions in remote rural areas; collection, analysis and storage of data of clients of micro credit services; online information on community tourism initiatives.
