Farming on the Frontline: FAO Maps Ukraine’s Resilience

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has released a geospatial study analyzing changes in Kharkiv Oblast’s agricultural landscape from 2021 to 2024. Using satellite imagery and remote sensing, FAO quantified the impact of conflict on farmland, crop production, and land-use patterns, providing actionable evidence to guide recovery, farmer support, and food security interventions.

Despite ongoing military threats and occupation in parts of the region, Ukrainian farmers have shown remarkable resilience, adapting cropping systems and reclaiming fields under challenging circumstances. FAO’s study highlights where vulnerability is greatest, while also identifying areas where recovery is progressing.

Key insights include:

  • Pre-invasion farmland in Kharkiv Oblast covered nearly 1.86 million hectares.
  • Uncultivated land rose to 28% in 2023, reflecting peak disruption, before declining to 19% in 2024.
  • Wheat and barley acreage fell to 297,000 ha in 2023, then rebounded to 539,000 ha in 2024.
  • Maize peaked at 335,000 ha in 2022 but fell to 185,000 ha by 2024.
  • Sunflower cultivation steadily expanded from 325,000 ha in 2022 to 589,000 ha by 2024.

These patterns underscore the dual realities of vulnerability and resilience: while conflict has disrupted production, farmers’ efforts and local adaptations are enabling gradual recovery. By providing these data-driven insights, FAO supports policymakers, humanitarian actors, and local stakeholders in targeting interventions, restoring livelihoods, and reinforcing food security.

This study also exemplifies the value of geospatial and remote-sensing technologies in conflict-affected areas, allowing FAO to monitor agricultural systems in near real-time and tailor support where it is needed most. The findings offer lessons not only for Kharkiv Oblast but also for other regions facing similar challenges, highlighting how evidence can inform practical action under complex circumstances.
