A date in the desert

In many rural communities, limited access to finance, markets and practical information continues to constrain the potential of women entrepreneurs, particularly in the agricultural sector. Kaouther Aounallah, a young agribusiness owner from Kebili in southern Tunisia, is navigating these challenges by building on what her region has always had to offer: dates.

In 2022, after completing her studies in agricultural sciences, Kaouther founded Sweet Jana, an artisanal bakery that transforms this traditional local ingredient into a range of nutritious products. Beyond the product itself, the business employs eight women from her neighbourhood and operates on a circular model: returning date pits to local farmers for animal feed and using eco-friendly packaging throughout.

With support from the FAO Agri-Accelerator, a programme providing tailored coaching and guidance to youth-led agribusinesses across eleven countries in Europe, North and West Africa and Southeast Asia, Kaouther has strengthened her business model and broadened her impact on the local community.

"Helping women, especially in rural areas, access employment and become more independent is one of my greatest ambitions," she said.

Her story is part of a series celebrating women farmers worldwide, in the framework of the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026.
