Digital tools such as IoT sensors, blockchain traceability, satellite imagery and AI are becoming core infrastructure in agrifood systems. Precision agriculture now covers 22% of arable land, up from 8% in 2018. But transparency alone does not deliver better environmental outcomes. The next step is to measure, manage and reward ecosystem services such as soil health, biodiversity, water stewardship and carbon.

On 13 November, FAO will host a webinar asking whether digital transparency can drive transformative, sustainability-led change, or whether it also needs governance reform, aligned incentives, interoperable data systems and investment in ecosystem outcomes.

Moderated by Siobhan Kelly (Agribusiness Officer, FAO), the session will bring together:

  • Leonardo Bonanni, CEO and Founder, Source Map, on what digital supply chain mapping reveals and where its blind spots remain
  • Teodor Petricevic, Product and Growth Lead, UNDP, on governance and interoperability (TBC)
  • Magan Naidoo, Chief Data Officer, WFP, on how data-driven supply chains hold up under compound shocks
  • John Trask, CEO, Dimitra, on making digital traceability work for smallholders and indigenous farmers in Suriname
  • Rémi d’Annunzio, Forestry Officer, FAO, on turning ecosystem service data into operational indicators
  • Adriano Bolchini, Child Labour Specialist, FAO, on linking traceability with human rights and ecosystem impacts, drawing on the DIGICHILD example

The webinar closes with an open Q&A, giving participants the chance to discuss how farm, supply chain and environmental data can be linked, and what it will take to turn pilots into scalable, trusted systems.

Join us to explore a clearer pathway from supply chain transparency to verified ecosystem services.
