Aquaculture, a key ally for food and livelihoods in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea

19/02/2026

Coastal communities in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea have a long-standing tradition in capture fisheries. Yet increasing pressures on wild stocks and the growing demand for aquatic foods call now for new solutions. Aquaculture is increasingly recognized as an ally, helping communities produce nutritious food sustainably while building resilient livelihoods.

Like every other type of farming, aquaculture relies on technology and know-how to prosper. Farmers and scientists working together across borders play a key role in sharing this vital expertise for the benefit of local communities and regional economies.

The cooperation between Morocco, Italy and Romania shows what regional exchange can deliver in practical terms: faster uptake on technologies that work, reduced risk for new producers and stronger technical capacity on the ground.

By connecting hatcheries, researchers and farmers, the GFCM shows how targeted knowledge transfer – including through its Aquaculture Demonstration Centres - can translate directly into new production lines, diversified income and more resilient coastal fisheries and communities.

It also shows that investing in sustainable aquaculture can strengthen food security while ensuring that growth in production goes hand in hand with responsible resource management.
