Global Parliamentary Summit adopts Global Pact against Hunger and Malnutrition

27/06/2023

On June 15 and 16, 2023, the II Global Parliamentary Summit against Hunger and Malnutrition took place at the National Congress of Chile, located in Valparaíso. The highlight of this Summit was the adoption of a new Global Parliamentary Pact against Hunger and Malnutrition. The Pact represents a significant step towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 and ending hunger and malnutrition worldwide.

The Summit was organized by FAO, in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the National Congress of Chile, and the Government of Chile, with the support of the European Commission, the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), and the Parliamentary Front against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean. The honorable deputy Carolina Marzán of Chile served as the host of this event.

During the summit, over 200 parliamentarians from 64 countries discussed successful practices and examples of innovative legislation about the right to adequate food, agrifood systems and food security. Thematic sessions and side events fostered the exchange of experiences and the creation of connections and collaborations among parliamentarians from around the world.

The Development Law Service of the FAO Legal Office (LEGN) was part of the technical secretariat that provided its technical legal assistance to parliamentarians during the discussion and adoption of the pact.

In the Global Parliamentary Pact, parliamentarians commit to working towards the transformation to sustainable agri-food systems and ensuring the right to adequate food. The pact emphasizes the need to implement concrete initiatives, legislation, and budget allocations. It also establishes a commitment to measuring progress on these issues with the support of FAO. The pact calls for support from international partners, among others, and urges the Committee on World Food Security to establish a mechanism for parliamentary representation in its sessions. Finally, FAO is urged to convene a Third Global Parliamentary Summit in Africa, before 2026.

The FAO Legal Office is always pleased to support parliamentarians worldwide in their important tasks to end hunger and malnutrition.
