Worries rise over outbreaks of avian flu in West Africa
©FAO/Pius Utomi Ekpei
20 July 2015, Rome--- The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization is calling for $20 million to prevent the spread of the highly viral avian flu H5N1 across West Africa. The call follows outbreaks of the virus in poultry farms, markets and family holdings in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Niger, Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana and fears are growing that without timely intervention spread across the region and beyond is inevitable.

Dr. Juan Lubroth is FAO’s Chief Veterinary Officer in Rome. In the following interview he elaborates more on this latest outbreak and what needs to be done going forward. (interview conducted by Sandra Ferrari)
