Senegal has taken significant steps to strengthen its fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing through the implementation of the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA).

From 17 to 19 November 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Senegalese authorities worked together to enhance data exchange using the PSMA Global Information Exchange System (GIES) and the FAO Global Record of Fishing Vessels, Refrigerated Transport Vessels and Supply Vessels.

The mission conducted in Dakar and Diamniadio was supported by a project funded by the European Union. It featured an inter-agency workshop and bilateral meetings with fisheries and maritime agencies to review operations and assess existing national fisheries information systems. Fisheries inspectors and maritime officers also received hands-on technical training on GIES and the FAO Global Record as part of capacity-building efforts.

As Senegal reinforces its commitment to transparency, a roadmap for uploading information on registered vessels and authorizations into the FAO Global Record was developed during the mission—marking a key milestone in sustainable fisheries management.

Other activities will follow in the coming months within the framework of the implementation of a separate project, notably to train maritime agents in the use of the GIES so that they can submit Advanced Request for port Entry (ARPE) directly into the system. Once completed, Senegal will be able to fully utilize the functionalities of the GIES system.
