    Healthy oceans and seas are more important than ever. Oceans and seas cover more than 70 percent of our planet’s surface, provide half of the world’s oxygen, sequester carbon, and serve as home to 80 percent of life on earth. SDG 14, Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development, is a major goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which commits the international community to act to surmount the key challenges facing our planet and all those who live on it. A focus on SDG 14 will be crucial to protecting marine resources, and the important role they play in human well-being and social and economic development worldwide. Through monitoring, instruments, both binding and non-binding, and other activities, FAO is working with countries to achieve SDG 14 objectives, addressing linkages with other targets of the 2030 Agenda and ensuring sustainable development in all three dimensions. This booklet shines a light on FAO’s work with countries and partners across the globe to ensure our oceans, seas and marine resources are used sustainably for the benefit of present and future generations.

    Informing Water-Energy-Water nexus decisions: the integrated WEF nexus model of Jordan 2022

    Due to the water shortage in Jordan, the safe water abstraction yields are often exceeded. Groundwater extractions require large amounts of energy, due to the decreasing water table levels of almost all aquifers in the country. Therefore, around 14.9 percent of the supplied electricity is consumed by water pumping and other water services. Moreover, additional energy requirements will be needed to deal with an expanding water supply through desalination and wastewater treatment.The agriculture sector accounts for the largest share of water demand (around 52 percent), where again, groundwater is the main source. Furthermore, as a consequence of its water-scarce nature, Jordan faces increasing food insecurity being forced to import around 87 percent of its food. Achieving sustainable water-energy-food (WEF) resources security requires developing safe operational boundaries of water use defining the conditions for water sustainability in Jordan. These boundaries were defined using a Water-Food-Energy-Climate-Ecosystems Nexus analytical framework that was highly stakeholder-driven, combined with quantitative and qualitative methods developed by the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH) and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). In this flyer, the reader will be able to know the methodology used to develop WEF NEXUS model, scenario analysis, results and key findings.

    Thematic studies on groundwater governance 2016

    The document is a compilation of up-to-date, existing knowledge on groundwater governance, developed by leading international scientists and experts within the framework of the GEF project “Groundwater Governance - A Global Framework of Action”. It covers nine selected themes that focus on different aspects and adopt different angles of view. Some of the themes deal with scientific and technical aspects (groundwater quality and quantity and approaches to their management), others with the govern ance and policy process in general or with selected aspects of groundwater governance (context, law, institutions, social and economic aspects). In addition, two themes that had been covered by the World Bank were added: one on political economy and the other on climate change. The document, comprising the thematic papers and their synthesis, forms a unique volume of knowledge on groundwater governance, a subject that in similar compiled form is not yet documented elsewhere. Therefore, the Proje ct made an effort to make the information publicly available to those interested in the fascinating subject of groundwater governance.
