Synopsis (short abstract) This manual complements FAO Land Tenure Studies 6: The design of land consolidation pilot projects in Central and Eastern Europe. The manual concentrates on the practical aspects of defining and implementing the first pilot projects. It identifies the main conditions that should be in place before the project starts, and it defines potentials and constraints. It draws attention to issues that should be addressed and it discusses methods, tools and techniques. The manual identifies the main activ ities in a pilot project and their sequence.

    This paper offers an overview of land reform processes in the CEECs and their outcomes and impacts and analyzes current and emerging structures in rural areas. Different types of land consolidation are defined and their potential impacts are assessed. The paper then looks in depth at land consolidation processes, especially in the context of land management, and outlines preconditions and cornerstones for various approaches. Environmental aspects and principles for land funds and land banking ar e also drawn in. The paper argues the need for an integrated and sustainable rural development which includes a role for land consolidation.

    This report focuses on the findings of the assessments carried out in Tana River and Turkana Counties. The report identifies a number of recommendations revolving around awareness creation (community sensitization) by non-governmental organizations to enlighten the communities about their rights and the importance of adhering to constitutional principles such as participation and consultation. Other recommended interventions include proper land use planning, the formation of group ranches for th e sustainable management of resources, exposure visits to other communities to exchange ideas on how to move forward on the women’s land rights agenda, synergies with relevant offices in the county government, and working with religious leaders and organizations to advocate for women’s/youth’s rights.
