This indicator focuses on crop wild relatives and wild food plants species actively conserved in situ in the country of the reporting National Focal Point (NFP).
It is based on information reported in response to question 4.3 of the Reporting Format for Monitoring the Implementation of the Second Global Plan of Action for PGRFA.
Question 4.3 requests the NFP to provide the most recent estimation of the number of crop wild relatives, including all species from primary and secondary gene pools plus those from the tertiary gene pool previously used for breeding, and of wild food plants species actively conserved in situ in the country and the year of estimation. Optionally, any reference to their estimation can also be indicated.
By ‘actively conserved’ it is meant that the target species of crop wild relatives and/or wild food plant are specifically addressed by the management plan of the in situ conservation area. A country list of crop wild relatives can be retrieved from http://www.cwrdiversity.org/. All species from this list that are actively conserved in situ could then be counted.

The indicator is calculated as the sum total of crop wild relatives and wild food plants species actively conserved in situ in the country during the reporting period.
