This indicator focuses on samples distributed by genebanks in the country of the reporting Stakeholder to users of germplasm.
It is based on information reported in response to question 8.4 of the Reporting Format for Monitoring the Implementation of the Second Global Plan of Action for PGRFA.
Question 8.4 requests the Stakeholder to provide, for each crop or crop group, the number of accessions and the number of samples distributed by the national genebank(s) in the country during the reporting period. Optionally, the amounts distributed to the different categories of recipients can also be indicated.
An accession is a distinct, uniquely identifiable set of seeds or planting material representing a cultivar, breeding line or a population, which is maintained in storage for medium- or long-term conservation and use, whereas a sample typically is a representative small part or quantity of an accession. A genebank may distribute more samples than accessions as there can be more than one recipient of the same accession. The total number of samples distributed can therefore be greater than or equal to the total number of accessions distributed.
Information from question 8.4 fulfills indicators 28 and 29 of the Second GPA.

The indicator is calculated as the sum total of samples distributed by genebanks in the country to users of germplasm during the reporting period.

Samples distributed, annual average is the average number per year of samples distributed by genebanks of the selected county/region reported by the Stakeholder to users of germplasm during the reporting period.
