XIV World Forest Congress 2015

Collaborative Partnership on Forests to discuss post-2015 vision on forests

7 August 2015, Rome - Leaders from the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) are set to discuss their vision for the future of forests and forestry ahead of the XIV World Forestry Congress in Durban, South Africa, in September.

Representatives of the Partnership’s 14 member agencies will take part in the high-level dialogue on Sunday 6 September, a day before the week-long Congress and largest gathering on the forestry calendar begins.

CPF Leaders are expected to discuss how to strengthen the role of forests in view of the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda by the United Nations General Assembly this year as well as the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will agree a legally binding agreement on climate in December.

José Graziano da Silva, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), will open the event, entitled Towards a vision on forests in the post-2015 era, in FAO’s capacity as CPF Chair. Also speaking at the session will be:

• Peter Holmgren, Director General, Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)

• Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)

• Emmanuel Ze Meka, Executive Director, International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO)

• Mike W. Wingfield, President, International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO)

• Manoel Sobral Filho, Director, United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF)

• Tony Simons, Director General, World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF)

• Luis Bois Ankur, Regional Director, International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

• Sergio Zelaya, Special Advisor on Global Issues, United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)

• Mette Wilkie, Director of the Division of Environment Policy Implementation, UN Environment Programme (UNEP)

• Paula Caballero, Senior Director, Environment and Natural Resources, World Bank

The outcomes of the dialogue are expected to help shape the XIV World Forestry Congress Vision 2050 for forest, forestry and people, which will be defined during the Congress and issued at the end of the week.

The CPF event is open to anyone registered to attend the Congress.

The CPF consists of 14 international organizations, bodies and convention secretariats that have substantial programmes on forest. The Partnership works to promote sustainable management of all types of forests and to strengthen long-term political commitment to this end.
