Regional Workshop on Land Degradation Assessment
in Drylands (LADA) in the Caribbean
(3-7 February2004 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad)
|
|
The workshop was organized in partnership by
FAO, the Global Mechanism of the UNCCD, the German Technical
Cooperation GTZ and UNEP-Latin America and the Caribbean Regional
Office.
The
workshop was attended by 63 participants comprising National
Focal Points, NGO focal points, NGOs, land resources and land
degradation specialists, resource persons, representatives of
regional and international agencies and representatives of the
private and public sector.
The meeting consisted of two segments:
1) a planning session for the elaboration of
National Action Programmes (NAPs) and Sub-Regional Action Programme
coordination; and
2) a Workshop on Land Degradation Assessment(LADA).
As a result of the planning session, the problems
encountered by countries in preparing their NAPs were identified,
and proposals were made to assist the countries. The LADA segment
of the workshop reviewed the status of land degradation assessment
in Caribbean countries as well as Argentina, Mexico, including
the use of GIS based AEZ/LRIS tools. It reviewed the LADA methodology,
in particular the LADA seven-step approach on the basis of the
China and Argentina LADA pilot studies. It revised the draft
LADA project Framework and made proposals for its improvements.
The meeting finalized a draft Caribbean regional LADA TCP project
for submission to FAO via CARICOM. In the proposed Caribbean
LADA activities, the emphasis is to be placed on capacity building
in assessing and combating land degradation using local and
regional expertise through Technical Cooperation among Developing
Countries (TCDC). The workshop made recommendations for the
future development of the AEZ/LRIS methodology and tools to
overcome existing constraints and their further integration
in LADA.
The workshop proceedings are now under edition.

Regional Workshop on Agro-ecological Zoning
(AEZ) and GIS Applications in Asia with special emphasis on
Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands (LADA)
(8 - 15 November 2003 in Bangkok, Thailand)
|
|
The workshop was organized by FAO/AGL and RAP
in collaboration with the Land Development Department (LDD)
of Thailand. The workshop was attended by land resources and
land degradation specialists from 15 Asian countries and representatives
of UNCCD.
The
workshop reviewed the AEZ/LRIS situations and shared experiences
in AEZ/LRIS applications in land degradation assessment in the
various countries in the region. It reviewed the LADA methodology,
in particular the LADA 7-step approach on the basis of the China
LADA pilot study. It discussed ways to promote exchange of information,
data and experiences in land information in the region including
experiences and future collaboration in the FAO global network
Gateway to land and water information for the Internet. It made
recommendations for the future development of the AEZ/LRIS methodology
and tools to overcome existing constraints and their further
integration in LADA; more specifically it was recommended that
the AEZ framework and AEZ delineations be used in LADA assessment
studies and mapping. Preliminary draft national LADA TCP and
AEZ/LRIS proposals were prepared by each participating country.
The meeting proposed a draft outline for an Asia sub-regional
LADA project for capacity building in assessing and combating
land degradation using local expertise through Technical Cooperation
among Developing Countries (TCDC).
The workshop proceedings are now under edition.

Land and Water Resources Information Systems
(LWRIS) for food security in West Africa
(5 - 12 April 2003 in Dakar, Senegal)
|
|
A sub-regional workshop on land and water resources
information systems (LWRIS) for food security in West Africa
was organized by FAO (RAF/AGL) with the collaboration of the
Centre of Ecological Monitoring(CSE) and under the sponsorship
of the Ministry of Environment and Nature Protection of Senegal.
It was a meeting of land and water resources
specialists from 14 West African countries. The workshop presented

in particular the Internet based Gateway and AQUASTAT systems,
soil and terrain, agro-ecological (AEZ) databases and software.
A mechanism for future collaboration in information reporting
and exchange in the sub-region was discussed. It was decided
to create an informal land and water resources information network.
