Introduction

This information base is published by the 'Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands' (LADA) project, funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), executed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and supported by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ISRIC), the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT) as well as other regional and national partners.

The intention of this information tool is to serve as a major source of information for dryland experts and development planners as well as for the interested general public. It contains general information on drylands and specialized information on dryland management practices and strategies. It also comprises diagnosis/ assessments of dryland conditions, comprehensive case studies and lessons learnt, assessment methodologies for land degradation in drylands based on both traditional knowledge and scientific information.

The content of the information base draws on the records of the FAO drylands database, also retrievable from the LADA Virtual Centre (see: http://lada.virtualcentre.org/pagedisplay/display.asp). This encompasses relevant digitally available information sources published by FAO as well as by other important stakeholders working and researching drylands. By clicking on the title of a publication/website the user is directly linked to the respective file or website; by clicking on details the user can retrieve metadata describing the information.
