Soils with a thick, dark topsoil rich in organic matter and evidence of removal of carbonates.

Distribution
There are approximately 190 million hectares of Phaeozems, distributed mainly in the more humid steppes of Russia, the prairies of USA and Canada, the pampas of Argentina and Uruguay, China and southeastern parts of Europe.
