In Asia and the Pacific, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is helping its member countries improve nutrition from the ground up. In an effort to making a difference in the livelihood of people living in remote areas of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the ECHO funded FAO project undertook actions aiming at supporting critically food insecure rural men and women and increasing their resilience towards chronic and seasonal shocks and stresses through an integrated approach that involved distribution of agricultural inputs, cash transfers and extensive training programmes on vegetable and fruit production, jum rice management and seeds preservation, poultry management, and training on nutrition, food safety and food preparation. In addition, the project also supported the construction of a small water harvesting facility at community level and provided training on community water management in order to support the resilience of remote men and women to water scarcity during the critical dry winter period. The video documented the success stories of direct beneficiaries under the project. The documentary shows the diversifying lifestyle of the beneficiaries with the provision of inputs and trainings as a direct positive impact of the project. By learning better techniques of poultry rearing and fruits and vegetable production, the project beneficiaries are now able to pave a better future for their next generation.

21 March 2016 - With ongoing drought and farmers facing some of their most serious access to water issues for many years,  students from a number of international and local high schools and universities in Bangkok have held a lively debate on the future of the region’s forests and their link to our critical supply of fresh water.   The debate was held on International Day of Forests, celebrated 21 March each year.  IDF was established by the United Nations General Assembly to raise awareness of the importance of forests and trees in ensuring the sustainability of ecosystems, providing valuable goods and services, supporting livelihoods, and reducing hunger.  The theme of this year’s International Day of Forests is “Forests and Water,” which was also the topic of today’s debate, held at FAO’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok
