PREPARATION OF THIS DOCUMENT

This document is a revision of FAO Fisheries Circular No. 134 based on a more extensive survey of the literature and on data sent in reply to the request for information contained in that circular. It is intended to serve as a background document for the Committee for Inland Fisheries of Africa (CIFA) as well as a reference for workers on African fisheries throughout the continent.

The designations employed, and the presentation of the material and maps in this publication do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever on the part of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations concerning the legal or constitutional status of any country, territory, sea, lake or river area, or concerning the delimitation of frontiers.
