UNCCD COP12 - Forests and Landscapes Forum: A side event on “Ecosystem and landscape approaches to tackle land degradation and promote ecosystem restoration”
GM-UNCCD, Turkish Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, TIKA, FAO, Korea Forest Service, CBD and FERI This event is organized by the Global Mechanism of the UNCCD, in partnership with the Ministry of Forest and Water Affairs and TIKA (Government of Turkey), FAO, Korea Forest Service, CBD and FERI.
Background: Currently, it is estimated that there is a total stock of more than two billion hectares of degraded land, which offer opportunities for ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, food security and increased resilience of ecosystems and local communities. Significant global targets to address this situation have been established in the context of relevant initiatives such as the Bonn Challenge, the New York Declaration on Forests, the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and the proposed SDG target 15.3 on Land Degradation Neutrality. Objective: The side event will showcase the contribution of forest and landscape restoration, sustainable land management, and ecosystem based adaptation to address land degradation and desertification. Key topics: Through a variety of presentations from selected stakeholders (including intergovernmental and international organizations, national representatives, and NGOs), this event will review relevant initiatives at global, (sub)regional, national and local levels, as well as discuss technical and financing aspects of ecosystem and landscape approaches to tackle land degradation and promote ecosystem restoration. NOTE: please refer to the attached concept note for full details of the event, including its agenda.
