Addis Ababa - Funding from the German Federal Foreign Office has boosted FAO’s efforts to mitigate the impacts of desert locust invasion on food security and livelihoods in Ethiopia.

The “Livelihood response to mitigate impacts of desert locust invasion on food security and livelihoods” project is being implemented in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia between May 2021 and April 2022 with a total budget of EUR 10 000 000 (Euro 5 356 000 for Ethiopia).

The project targets desert locust-affected areas experiencing high levels of food insecurity and malnutrition.

In Ethiopia, the project is supporting agro-pastoral and pastoral communities in Afar and Somali regions.

Specifically, it is supporting vaccination of livestock against transboundary diseases as well as training and equipping of Community Animal Health Workers to support livestock extension services. The project is also supporting crop and forage production as well as the disbursement of unconditional cash transfers to the targeted communities. In addition, it will support the rehabilitation of productive infrastructure through Cash- for-Work.
