Agroecology holds promise in Congo Basin — if funding woes can be overcome

Emmanuel Eku used his skills in agroecology to make the soil in his village in the southwestern part of Cameroon more productive. His five-year project, which was helped by an NGO, shows how hard it is for farmers to stop using synthetic fertilisers and other standard inputs. Now, Eku shares his knowledge with the people around him, bringing them together and helping them in the same way. His amazing journey began when he used agroecological methods to bring back the yield of a plot of land in his hometown. Eku and Mbuya Kilabi recently went to a conference in Kinshasa put on by the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA). They pushed for a change in the way food is grown and how agriculture policies are made. Their engaging story, which they told to more than 200 people from different parts of Africa, shows how agroecology could help create food systems that are both sustainable and fair. This story of resilience and community, which was told to Mongabay, not only shows what agroecological changes are all about, but it also gives farmers all over Africa hope and a plan they can follow.
