Water Accounting (WA)

Crop Mapping

2019

A detailed land use and crop map using remote sensing was prepared for Berrechid site for one cropping season, with the aim of assessing better crop water consumption.

2019

Two Moroccan experts were trained on the realization of crop maps using remote sensing and the use of the FAO WaPOR Database.

ET measurement

2019 – 2020

Installation of a site of the ET Network in a farmer field in Berrechid aquifer. ET field measurement is done using different instruments indirect measurement (ex. energy balance measurement with Edicovariance). One of the instrument is an improved agrometeor stations completed by sensors (ET Cordova station) to measure cereal evapotranspiration comparing between different treatments. Monitoring ongoing.

2019

Two Moroccan experts were trained on the fabrication and installation of the ET Cordova station.

Pilot WA

2019 – 2020

- A case study on Rapid Water Accounting (RWA) was realized on the Berrechid aquifer to analyze the realities of water scarcity and opportunities (report under development).

- A case study on RWA was realized on the high Souss Massa to explore the effects of irrigation modernization and climate change impacts (report under development).

Training on WA and Auditing

2019

Four national experts were trained to become analysts on advanced water accounting and auditing in a regional training implemented by FAO with IHE-Delft, and IWMI-MENA in Cairo.

2020

Twenty national and sub-national experts were trained on the water accounting assessment process covering the RWA and different WA frameworks. A series of trainings were implemented at local level and through virtual webinars.

Water Productivity (WP)

WP Assessment

2018

Six experts were trained on the concepts and methodologies of WP.

2019

Four experts shared their WP experience at the regional WP conference and successfully joined the WP community of practice.

WP at field site: Farmer experimentation

2019 – 2020

Five Farmer Field Schools (FFS) were established in Berrechid region with the support of ONCA and the IAV Hassan II. Schools were set in three villages on good agricultural practices for different vegetables, where 25 farmers participated in each school and one experimental plot per school was available.

2020

A Training of Trainers on FFS methodology was carried out by FAO and ONCA for ONCA facilitators from different regions of the country, and three refresher courses were done discussing technical topics.

2020 - 2021

IAV Hassan II implemented a nation-wide WP baseline and the field level WP assessment with a detailed farmer survey on practices versus water.

Local Governance

2019 – 2020

The process of social engagement of farmers around water and agriculture in six villages was initiated around scientific evidences and dialogues. One farmer association on vegetable production engaged in the aquifer concession with the basin agency, and volunteered to monitor their water consumption at field level.
