Regional Consultation on the Coalition on Indigenous Peoples Food Systems

23/05/2022 -

Register now to take part in the regional consultations of the Coalition on Indigenous Peoples’ food systems this week! The consultations are organized by the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, with technical support from DOCIP and FAO.

In 2021, at the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS), it was made clear that if we are to meet the goals of the 2030 Agenda food systems must become more sustainable and equitable. Indigenous Peoples have a key role to play in this transformation. Our food systems are sustainable and resilient, they generate food for millions of people, and also help to maintain healthy ecosystems and preserve over 80% of the Earth’s biodiversity.

To advocate for the ‘game-changing’ nature of our food systems, Indigenous leaders and experts worked collectively during the UNFSS, participating for over a year through the different action tracks, organizing more than 30 consultations where the seven socio-cultural regions participated, and collaborating with different UN agencies.

Thanks to this collective effort, we created a Coalition on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems as a major outcome of the UNFSS, together with the support of the governments of Canada, Dominican Republic, Finland, Mexico, Norway, New Zealand and Spain, FAO and the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Our coalition is led by Indigenous Peoples as a space where Indigenous Peoples, member states and UN agencies can work together to strengthen Indigenous Peoples´ food systems. It has two objectives: (1) To respect, protect and strengthen Indigenous Peoples’ food systems across the world, and (2) to disseminate and scale up traditional knowledge and good practices from the Indigenous Peoples’ with the potential to transform global food systems at large.

The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues would like to invite Indigenous brothers and sisters to contribute to the coalition with your proposals and inputs to ensure that the workplan influences policy at the national, regional and global levels.
