Advancing sustainable inland fisheries and aquaculture in Europe: EIFAAC hosts 32nd Session and International Symposium

The European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission (EIFAAC) is dedicated to the sustainable development and responsible management of European inland fisheries and aquaculture. In line with the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, EIFAAC promotes sustainable economic, social, and recreational activities through expert advice, stakeholder engagement, and research.

Ahead of its 32nd session, scheduled for 9 to 11 October, in Pula, Croatia, EIFAAC will convene this year an International Symposium from 7 to 9 October. Hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Croatia and the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture, the Symposium will provide a platform for European scientists and policymakers to exchange insights and share the latest research in inland fisheries and freshwater aquaculture.  The findings and recommendations of the Symposium will be presented directly at the 32nd EIFAAC Session.

Key themes of the Symposium include:

  • Stock assessment and freshwater fish management (and fish stocking)
  • Migratory fishes - problems and conservation
  • Exploring the use of artificial intelligence in inland fisheries and aquaculture
  • Freshwater invasives networking for strategy (FINS III)
  • Climate change and impacts on inland waters, fisheries and aquaculture
  • Developments and challenges in freshwater aquaculture (technology, environment, economic and circular economy aspects)
  • Advances in recreational fisheries research and management
  • Innovative management for conservation of freshwater areas and aquatic biodiversity
  • Citizen science and socio-economic aspects of freshwater fishery and aquaculture

Along with the symposium, the following workshops and panel discussions will be held:

1. Workshop on management advice for reducing the impact of cormorant predation on fish and fisheries

2. Freshwater invasives networking for strategy (FINS III) workshop
