International Scientific Conference on “Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture”

The International Scientific Conference on “Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture” took place on 8 November in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Over 100 academics , technical experts and decision-makers participated to facilitate experience and knowledge sharing on the implementation of agroecological and sustainable development principles.

As a result of the conference, many fruitful and scientifically stimulating discussions took place on the main theme “Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture” followed up by three sub-streams on FORESTRY, HORTICULTURE, and AGROECOLOGY.

The scientific conference was opened by H.E. Ms. Axelle Nicaise, the Ambassador of the European Union to Mongolia. During her opening speech, she emphasized the importance of transforming agricultural and food systems to work with and not against the nature, and that the introduction of agroecological practices in Mongolia could contribute to increasing herders’ and farmers’ income, food security and their resilience to climate change.

Mr. Vinod Ahuja, FAO Representative in Mongolia highlighted the FAO’s critical role in capacity building, technology support, normative guidance, and knowledge management; and importance continue to build and disseminate frameworks, tools and metrics to support transitions in line with national priorities.

Mr Pierre Ferrand, Agriculture Officer and focal person for Agroecology and Family Farmingin the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, presented the conceptual evolution of the agroecology approach and it’s integration within a Food System Approach.

Furthermore, this scientific conference was co-organized by the Mongolian University of Life Sciences, the European Union co-funded “Sustainable Resilient Ecosystem and Agriculture Management in Mongolia” (STREAM) project and the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ulaanbaatar.

The STREAM project is co-funded by the European Union and the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and co-implemented by GIZ and UN FAO in cooperation with Ministry of Environment and Tourism, and Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry.
