Multi-stakeholder discussion organized on the 50th anniversary of Mongolia’s membership in FAO

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Mongolia becoming a member of FAO, a multi-stakeholder discussion on “Climate change, desertification and land degradation” implications for food systems sustainability was organized on 24 August 2023 in Dundgobi province around 430 kilometers from the capital city of Mongolia.

The event was attended by the Chief of Staff of the President’s Office, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Environment and Tourism, the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Environment, Food and Agriculture, and the State Secretary of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry among other high-level guests. The President of Mongolia issued a message for the 50th anniversary of FAO Mongolia highlighting the significance of the cooperation.

During the multi-stakeholder event, a high-level discussion on climate change, land degradation, and food systems in Mongolia took place, as well as a technical panel discussion on changes in the state of Mongolia's grasslands, consequences, and possible solutions for recovery.

In addition, the Minister of Environment and Tourism gave a keynote speech on the main challenges facing the current situation of Climate Change and Land Degradation. Presentations about the Forestry Partnership between EU and Mongolia, the National Adaptation Plan, Practices of forestry development in Inner Mongolia and Climate change awareness survey results were presented and discussed by organizations such as the EU, the Climate - Development Academy NGO, the European Investment Bank, and the Global Green Growth Institute.

As a result of the discussion, the Parliament, line Ministries, and international organizations agreed on their increased commitment to improve the inter-sectoral coordination in the fields of agriculture, land and pasture use and protection, combating desertification and introducing technologies suitable for the conditions of Mongolia to prevent sand movement and to further strengthen the cooperation on issues such as carbon sequestration, research and introduction of regulations for participation in the carbon market, and diversifying financial sources.
