Alliance between FAO and GALVmed for better animal health in tsese affected areas.

FAO, has, over the years, been involved in efforts to mobilize and coordinate activities aimed at increasing the control of African animal disease burden within the context of sustainable agriculture and rural development (SARD). In particular, the aim has been to develop and promote strategies for poor livestock keepers and smallholders. In this commitment to implement responsible and sustainable improved animal health interventions, several sub-Saharan countries have initiated actions aimed at improving animal health services, including the availability, accessibility, affordable and quality of veterinary medicines.

The Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines (GALVmed) is a pro-poor livestock health product development and adoption partnership organisation working with key stakeholders to make a sustainable difference to the lives of some of the millions who rely on livestock for daily needs and cash in crisis.

Within this context, in January 2013, FAO and the Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines (GALVmed) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to improve cooperation and the coordination of activities in respect of the value chain from research through to delivery of those products and services. The present MoU will enable, amongst other things, the FAO and GALVmed to explore synergies to capacity building and address technical gaps, with a view to improving efficiency and cost effectiveness of products and services.
